variable inlet

variable inlet
A variable-geometry air breathing engine inlet whose area, lip, wedge, or center-body axial position and duct profile can all be suitably changed to meet the requirements of mass flow and the position of shock waves.
An example of variable inlet. In this case, the nose cone remains retracted from start up till aircraft achieves speed of Mach 1.3 when it moves fully forward. In other examples, it may keep moving at all speeds depending on altitude, speed, and throttle position.
